St. John's Sponsoring CIFF Film "By Blood"

On Thursday, March 26 at 9 PM, and on Friday, March 27 at 10 PM, at Tower City Cinemas in Cleveland, St John’s as a Community Partner in the Cleveland International Film Festival is sponsoring showings of the full-length documentary film, By Blood, made by Marcos Barbery and Sam Russell.

Both filmmakers will attend the screenings, and you will be able to engage with them.  The documentary tells a riveting story of the collision between two struggles for survival and inclusion—that of African slaves and their descendants, and that of Native Americans and their descendants.  These two struggles overlap, and collide, in the story of the slaves held by the Cherokee and Seminole Nations, who were freed by the Emancipation Proclamation and granted membership in the tribes.  At the present time, the Native Americans are seeking to disenfranchise the descendants of former slaves, and those descendants are seeking to reclaim tribal rights.  It’s fascinating and bewildering.  Come see it.  Running time, 64 minutes.

St John’s is sponsoring this showing because our history contains both support for freedom seekers on the Underground Railroad and support for the American Indian Movement as the Headquarters for Russell Means in the 1970’s.

If you want tickets for this film, since St John’s is sponsoring it, you can get a $2 discount.  Bring a group from your parish!  Information, and links, are below.
