The Church of the Redeemer and First Lutheran Evangelical Lutheran Church, both located in downtown Lorain, will share Christmas services this year. Services will include a 5:00 family-focused service, an 8:00 service with the First Lutheran Bell Choir providing special music, and a 10:00 service with a joint choir. A First Lutheran tradition of a Christmas morning potluck breakfast at 9:00 followed by worship at 10:00 will continue at Redeemer.
Soon after the flames were extinguished at First Lutheran Church in downtown Lorain on August 28, Redeemer offered to let First Lutheran use space for whatever they needed, building on a relationship that has been developing in recent years. First Lutheran’s food pantry moved into empty classrooms in early September. A weekly financial assistance ministry sponsored by several downtown Lorain congregations has also moved into Redeemer.
The two congregations worshiped together unexpectedly in early October when the elementary school where First Lutheran was renting space was closed due to a gas leak and there was not time to find another appropriate space. Holy Week services as well as services for weekday major feasts of the church will happen at Redeemer.
