There will be a recital on Sunday, November 16, at 3 PM to honor Velma Bunke (recitalist Rev. Jeff Bunke's aunt) at her 100th birthday. The recital will take place at St. Stephen Lutheran Church, 30304 New Bavaria Rd., Defiance.
Beginning at age 11, Velma Bunke played the organ at St. Stephen for 75 years, until finally that wooden bench became too uncomfortable. Continuing the tradition, Mrs. Bunke taught her nephew, Jeff, to play for services when he was age 11. Later, Fr. Bunke studied with Kathryn Johnson at Valparaiso University. While he has served as parish musician and recitalist in a number of settings, his primary vocation has been that of Episcopal priest. Jeff currently serves as rector of St. Timothy's, Perrysburg and is a clergy member of AGO Toledo. St. Stephen's organ is a 1912 Kilgen and Sons (St. Louis). Originally a tracker action "swell organ" (one manual and pedal) of 9 ranks, the instrument was rebuilt by Roush in 1974, adding a small reed stop and converting to a solid-state, 2-manual and pedal console.
