The Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates Consecrated as 16th Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts

More than 120 parishoners and others from the Diocese of Ohio traveled to Massachusetts to celebrate on September 13 when the Rt. Rev. Alan M. Gates was consecrated as the 16th Bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts. Boston University’s Agganis Arena was transformed into a sacred space for the service, which was both celebratory and solemn as the bishop-elect knelt for the prayer of consecration and the 28 participating bishops placed their hands on his head, passing on Episcopal authority. The Rt. Rev. M. Thomas Shaw, SSJE, passed the diocesan crozier to Gates, resigning his office after 20 years as bishop of the Diocese of Massachusetts.

Bishop Hollingsworth delivered the sermon, which may be downloaded here.

All of us in the Diocese of Ohio congratulate Bishop Gates, and wish him well as he begins his new work.
