Lenten Workshops at St. Barnabas, Bay Village

Strengthening Your Relationship with God

A Series of Lenten Workshops

St. Barnabas Episcopal Church

468 Bradley Rd. Bay Village, OH

Lent is a time for strengthening your relationship with God.  St. Barnabas is pleased to offer three workshops, each designed to help do that in a different way.  Each workshop will offer some teaching and some time for quiet reflection. You are encouraged to attend one, two or three.

Light refreshments will be offered.  You are invited to bring a brown bag lunch.  There is no registration fee, donations are appreciated.  Please let the office know if you are planning to attend so we can have an approximate count.

Saturday, March 14 Spiritual Practices,

The Rev. John Johannsen 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

John Johannsen is an Episcopal Priest who served as Canon to the Ordinary in the Diocese of Southern Ohio, has done interim ministry and serves as Spiritual Faculty for CREDO Institute, presenting conferences for Episcopal clergy

Just as we each learn in different ways, we respond to specific spiritual practices in different ways.  You probably know the practice that seems most comfortable to you—silent prayer, prayers out of the Prayer Book, singing hymns. Come learn about and experience a variety of spiritual practices. Try them on.  See what happens.

Saturday, March  21  Spiritual Writing Workshop,

Kelly Boyer Sagert 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Kelly Boyer Sagert is a fulltime professional writer, editor and mentor with 25 years of experience. She has published twelve books and is under contract for two more. She has been commissioned to write three full-length plays, one of which is being turned into a PBS documentary, and she has published thousands of articles in newspapers, magazines, encyclopedias, literary journals and online venues. She was ordained as a Presbyterian elder at the age of 16 and is currently serving on Session.

Writing can help bring clarity about a decision.  It can help you hear the voice of God.  Whether you write only for personal use, in your journal, or want to write hymns, poetry or prayers for your congregation, this workshop will help you develop writing as a way to strengthen your relationship with God.

Saturday, March 28  Forgiveness: Setting down Regrets and Anger,

The Rev. Sarah Shofstall 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Sarah Shofstall is an Episcopal priest who serves as the Priest in Charge of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church.  She is a Conference Leader for CREDO Institute and has helped to plan and present national conferences on reconciliation and forgiveness.

When Jesus admonished his followers to forgive transgressions seventy times seven, the word he used that is translated as “forgive” literally means to set something down and walk away. Jesus wants us to forgive because dragging around anger and resentment, burdens us. It gets in the way of joy. It blocks the light.  Come and learn about the process of forgiveness and how it can help you grow closer to God.  Not ready to forgive an old betrayal?  You will not be pushed. You may be able to reframe your understanding of forgiveness in a way that will bring healing.
