On Saturday, September 20, at 3:00 p.m. at the Historic St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ohio City, join us for a moving afternoon of performance and reflection as part of the Anisfield-Wolf Book Awards Celebration. The Karamu House Ensemble will bring to life the 1855 slave narrative of John Swanson Jacobs—an extraordinary account nearly lost to history. The text was recently rediscovered by Jonathan D. S. Schroeder, whose Anisfield-Wolf Award–winning book, The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots: A True Story of Slavery; A Rediscovered Narrative, with a Full Biography, restores Jacobs’ voice to our collective memory. Scholar Jonathan D. S. Schroeder will also provide historical context, offering insight into Jacobs’ life in the wake of enslavement and the narrative’s enduring significance. Registration is free, but required. A wait line will be available; seating offered first-come, first-served if space permits.
