A Community That Shows Up: St. Paul’s Housewares Giveaway

On April 22, the Rev. Julie Beitelschees received a welcome surprise at St. Paul’s, Oregon. Four clergy colleagues: the Revs. Gayle Catinella (St. Michael’s in the Hills, Toledo), Matt Wahlgren (St. Timothy's, Perrysburg), Jeff Bunke (St. Paul's, Maumee), and Mark Sims (Retired, St. Michael’s in the Hills, Toledo) arrived to lend a hand in preparation for the parish’s upcoming Housewares Giveaway. Together, they helped move and organize heavy items from the church into the Parish Hall, where they would later be sorted. Their presence was a meaningful reminder of the strength of community and the ways in which clergy and congregations support one another.

Just a few days later, on April 25, St. Paul’s hosted its Housewares Giveaway in the Parish Hall. The space was thoughtfully organized by category, with tables filled with home goods, kitchenware, appliances, and more, all offered free of charge. Larger items such as beds, mirrors, and framed artwork were also available. Guests could browse a wide range of items, including puzzles, toys, baby supplies, décor, and even medical supplies and first-aid kits.

A total of 88 people attended the event, including many children who delighted in exploring the toys and offerings. The atmosphere was one of generosity and joy, as community members connected with one another and found items to meet their needs.

Now in its fourth year, the Housewares Giveaway has become a beloved tradition at St. Paul’s, taking place three times annually. The ministry is strengthened through a partnership with CedarCreek Church, another Oregon faith community that distributes clothing in a similar model. Donations received by either organization are shared and transported accordingly—housewares to St. Paul’s and clothing to CedarCreek—ensuring that resources are distributed where they are most needed.

The impact of this ministry extends beyond the events themselves. Unclaimed items are donated to Cherry Street Mission in Toledo, where they help furnish apartments for individuals transitioning out of homelessness. The giveaway also draws volunteers from beyond the parish; some have even found a spiritual home at St. Paul’s through their involvement.

Those interested in supporting this ministry can donate items every Monday from 3:00–5:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s. The next Housewares Giveaway will take place on July 25 and will feature a special Holiday Extravaganza with seasonal decorations for all.
