Bellwether Farm

Bellwether Farm is wrapping up construction just in time for the summer season. The spring offered a few opportunities for members of the Diocese to enjoy the site. On the last Saturday in April, despite the chilly weather, about 40 youth from across the Diocese gathered at the site to plant apple, plum, pear, peach, and cherry trees in the orchard, as well as plant onions in the vegetable beds. They also learned about chickens and how they lay eggs. (One group got an actual demonstration from a cooperative hen.) In addition, the group placed their handprints and wrote prayers on the subfloor of the Worship Barn before the carpenters installed the reclaimed wood flooring for the building. Those marking will remain, blessing the space as we use it for many activities in the future. The first event in the Worship Barn was the ECW Annual Meeting on Saturday, May 19, when women from across the Diocese gathered for their business meeting, worship, and a keynote presentation by Lisa Towle, President of the National Episcopal Church Women. The staff at Bellwether Farm also gave a presentation on the various ways they define and approach sustainability. The group was able to see the rest of the buildings under construction, with crews on site working hard to finish everything before the start of the summer. The summer camp program runs in two weeklong sessions beginning Sunday, July 8 and Sunday, July 15. Besides the usual camp activities of swimming, fishing, archery, and canoeing, the camp also offers farming, cooking, adventures in creation, and more. Summer camp is available for those who will have finished 2-12 grades by the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Check the Bellwether Farm website ( to register or learn more about this year’s programs.
