Nominations to serve as a member of The Episcopal Church Executive Council are now being accepted through July 31, 2019. The Rev. Canon Michael Barlowe, Secretary of the General Convention, announced that the vacancy was created by the resignation of an Executive Council member whose term concludes at General Convention 2021.

Canon Barlowe noted since the vacancy was created by a priest, only priests or deacons may be nominated. He added, “In accordance with the Rules of Order, the Executive Committee of Executive Council will review all nominations and will forward at least two and no more than five candidates, from whom one will be elected by the whole of Executive Council.”

Canon Barlowe noted that candidates must attend upcoming Executive Council meetings: February 13–15, 2020; June 8–11, 2020; October 9–12, 2020; January 22–25, 2021; April 14–17, 2021.

Nominations should be submitted online here (English) or here (Spanish) by July 31, 2019.

In accordance with the Joint Rules of General Convention, Rule VII.17, nominees chosen by the Executive Committee will be subject to a background check that “will cover criminal records checks and sexual offender registry checks in any state where a proposed nominee has resided during the prior seven (7) years, any appropriate professional licensing bodies with jurisdiction over a nominee’s professional status and any violations of state or federal securities or banking laws.” Additionally, please note that “Background check information shall not be shared beyond the Office of the Secretary of General Convention, the Chief Legal Officer, and proposed nominees who request their own information. The cost of background checks under this rule shall be covered by the General Convention budget.”

As noted on The Episcopal Church website: The Executive Council of The Episcopal Church is an elected body representing the whole Church. In the course of the three years between conventions, known as the "triennium", the Executive Council will customarily meet once in each of the nine provinces of The Episcopal Church.
