Flapjacks and sausage links were flying off the grill Tuesday as part of an annual festivity at a downtown parish.
The tradition of Shrove Tuesday, sometimes referred to as, “Fat Tuesday,” was a time to scramble together butter and eggs to make fresh pancakes and grill sausage at St. Timothy Episcopal Church on Third Street SE, ahead of Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.
The Rev. George Baum, rector of the church, said the tradition is to clear out the pantry before the fasting period.
“It’s also about getting people (here) to have a good time, and enjoy some food,” said Baum. “We like opening our door and inviting the public, so they can see a comfortable place to come.”
