Director of Children and Youth Ministries - St. Michael's in the Hills, Toledo

St. Michael's in the Hills is a 67-year-old parish of the Episcopal Church located in Toledo, Ohio. We are an inclusive parish that is eager to revitalize our children and youth ministries. We are looking for someone to work with our dedicated and supportive parishioners to build this program from the ground up. We are open to innovation, creativity, and collaboration as we meet and exceed the goal of this ministry.

The Director is responsible for growing the ministries among children and youth. The goal is an integrated ministry that equips parents and families to put faith at the center of their lives, involves children and youth in a variety ofaspects of church life, and mentors youth as they grow in faith and life.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop vision, lay leadership and volunteers, and collaboration in our ministry with children and youth with an emphasis on spiritual growth and formation, and within the values expressed within this description.
  • Coordinate the Children and Youth Ministries at St. Michael's in collaboration with clergy, lay leaders, andvolunteers.
  • Work collaboratively to integrate our children and youth with liturgy & worship, music ministry, and mission & outreach ministries.
  • Cultivate summer formation opportunities (not limited to VBS).
  • Advocate and provide resources for youth and children to be leaders in their church, school, and community.
  • Build connections and relationships between families and with the larger parish and community.
  • Contribute to the life of the church by personal example, working in a thoughtful, caring manner to nurture the faith of our youth, including preaching, or providing a children's homily.

Requirements, Expectations and Qualifications

  • A sincere faith and Christ-centered life.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills, including fluency in the use of technology and social media to promote activities and communicate with the larger community.
  • Proven integrity, reliability, and ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in coordination with others and meet deadlines.
  • Have a history of building relationships with children, youth, and adults.
  • Passion for youth ministry and an ability to support the vision, mission, and policies of St. Michael’s.
  • Strong skills in organization and long-term planning.
  • Ability to think cross-generationally, creatively, and collaboratively.
  • Successful background in Christian formation of children and youth, or relevant academic background with at least an applicable two (2) year degree or two (2) years life experience; preferred: bachelor’s degree in relevant field (child development, education, ministry).
  • Clear background check of criminal history.


  • Part-time position (approximately 20 hrs. per week).
  • Open to both Lay persons or Clergy (note that clergy must be ordained in the Episcopal Church or denominations in full communion with the Episcopal Church to function in an ordained capacity).
  • Clergy applicants: note that hours and position will be adjusted to reflect shared sacramental and preaching responsibilities, and potentially broader interests in parish ministry.
  • Requires presence on Sunday mornings, office hours (to be determined), and additional meetings and times of work to be coordinated with the Priest-in-Charge. The nature of the work requires some evenings and weekends.
  • Salary commensurate with education and experience; and includes pro rata benefits (insurance, vacation,and continuing education). Minimum full-time salary is $19,000.
  • Performance will be reviewed after three (3) months and nine (9) months with evaluations occurringafter six (6) months and twelve (12) months each year.
